SymptomThe game hangs on a launch script, sign-in spinner or loading screen.

If Minecraft Dungeons II (Minecraft Dungeons 2) is stuck on a loading screen, a “launch script” download or a spinning sign-in, wait two or three minutes on the first start, then restart your PC and repair Gaming Services. Those were the fixes reported in the launch-day Steam threads. If the game hangs on a later loading screen instead, close it, verify files and test with overlays off.

Which “stuck” do you have?

  1. Stuck on the launch script or Gaming Services prompt before any game window appears.
  2. Stuck on the sign-in or “checking ownership” step.
  3. Stuck on the in-game loading screen when starting a hero, entering a zone or a dungeon.

What causes it (as far as we know)

Known: On PC, the game runs a Microsoft Gaming Services check on start. Several players in the Steam thread said it stalled on the launch script download and only continued after a restart or a repair.

Not confirmed: Whether in-game loading hangs are a bug, first-run shader work or a server hiccup. We haven’t found a Mojang statement. Reviewers also describe a message claiming the PC was offline even though the internet worked, which points at sign-in rather than your network.

Fixes, in order

1. Wait, then restart the PC

On first launch, give it two to three minutes. If the launch script is stuck, restart Windows, then start the game again. One Steam user said a restart alone solved it.

2. End the Gaming Services repair process

A player suggested opening Task Manager after a minute or two and ending the gaming repair process; the game then continued. Use this only if the repair window has not moved at all.

3. Repair or reset Gaming Services

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Gaming Services > ⋯ > Advanced options and select Repair, then Reset if needed. Another player reported that a Gaming Services repair tool fixed a non-starting game.

4. Sign in to the Xbox app before launching

Sign in with the account you will use, then start Dungeons II. If sign-in itself is failing, jump to Microsoft account link failed.

5. Verify game files and free disk space

In Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Keep several GB free on the drive.

6. Turn off overlays and background apps

Close capture software, RGB or fan-control tools, extra launchers and any controller-remapping app. One reviewer traced menu trouble to duplicated controllers from Steam Input, DSX and HidHide, so disable those while testing.

7. Update drivers and Windows

Install the latest GPU driver and all Windows updates, then restart. Check that you meet the system requirements, especially 8 GB RAM and 2 GB VRAM.

One player stuck on “Running install script” (and seeing error 0042 when opening the exe directly) fixed it by updating Gaming Services and Xbox under Microsoft Store > Downloads, signing in to the Xbox app and restarting the PC. That matches steps 3 to 4 above; it is one report.

8. Try disabling fullscreen optimizations

A poster stuck on the loading screen for a day said this fixed it: right-click Dungeons.exe > Properties > Compatibility > Disable fullscreen optimizations. It is one player’s report.

9. Try offline-friendly play

Some players report offline heroes and online heroes are separate. If the online sign-in hangs, an offline hero (solo or couch co-op) may still let you play while servers are busy. We haven’t verified how progress carries between the two, so don’t invest hours before checking. If the game seems “stuck offline” for you, one reply says that is expected: the hero you picked is an offline hero, and a hero cannot switch between modes. Another thread says creating a new hero lets you choose the mode again. See co-op and crossplay connection issues.

Console notes

Fully close the game and relaunch rather than resuming it (Quick Resume on Xbox can hold an old session). Then restart the console and check your platform’s online service status.

If it still hangs

No fix here is guaranteed; they’re the approaches players reported after launch on Sep 29, 2026.

FAQ

How long should the first launch take?

We have no official figure. Launch-day players describe waiting a minute or two on the first start while a launch script or Gaming Services step finishes. If nothing changes after roughly five minutes, use the fixes below.

Is it safe to end a process in Task Manager?

A Steam player reported ending the Gaming Services repair process after a couple of minutes of waiting, which let the game continue. Only end processes related to the game or its repair step, and do not end system processes.

Will installing the game on an SSD help?

It shouldn't hurt, but we haven't seen evidence that storage speed is the cause of the freezes reported at launch.

Does this happen on Xbox or PlayStation?

The reports we found were overwhelmingly PC. Console players who get stuck should fully close the game (not Quick Resume) and restart it.
