SymptomThe game says Gaming Services is missing, asks you to install it, and then crashes, closes or never opens a window.

If Minecraft Dungeons II (Minecraft Dungeons 2) says Gaming Services is missing and then crashes or does nothing when you click Yes, first update Gaming Services and the Xbox app in the Microsoft Store, sign in to the Xbox app, and restart your PC. If that fails, reset the Store, run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool, or reinstall Gaming Services with the PowerShell steps below. The PC version needs Microsoft’s Gaming Services to check ownership, so these Microsoft fixes target the cause.

Fixes, in order

1. Update Gaming Services and the Xbox app

Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, let Gaming Services and the Xbox app finish, run Windows Update, and restart. A Steam reply to a launch-day thread said updating Gaming Services in the Store fixed it, and another poster said it simply worked an hour later. Another said they installed the Xbox app from Microsoft’s official website and the prompt went away.

2. Sign in to the Xbox app first

Open the Xbox app, sign in with the account you will play on, then launch the game. One poster’s complete fix was: update Gaming Services and Xbox, sign in to Xbox, restart the PC.

3. Reset the Microsoft Store

Press Windows + R, type wsreset.exe and press Enter. The Store opens when it finishes. Players in the sign-in fix threads reported it alongside other steps; it is a standard Windows step, not specific to this game.

4. Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool

Xbox Support offers a Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC for installing or updating problems. Per that page, on Windows 22H2 or older you may need to be signed in as the local administrator to run it; updating Windows removes that limit. A Steam poster who ran the repair tool said it fixed their launch failure.

5. Reinstall Gaming Services with PowerShell

This is the method a Microsoft Community Moderator gave for reinstalling Gaming Services from scratch. Use it only if the steps above failed: it removes Gaming Services for every Xbox PC game on your computer until you reinstall it in step 4.

  1. Search for PowerShell, right-click Windows PowerShell and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run: get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers
  3. In the same window run: start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
  4. On the Store page, install the app and accept the UAC prompt.
  5. Restart the PC and launch the game.

Only run commands you understand. This removes Gaming Services for all users before reinstalling it, so do it when you can restart and are not mid-download in the Xbox app.

6. If the repair step hangs

If the game shows “Running install script” and nothing happens, a player said waiting a minute or two and ending the gaming repair process in Task Manager let the launch continue. See stuck on loading screen.

Official status

Mojang’s developer post on Steam (Sep 30) said most login and account linking issues were resolved on the backend, and that hotfixes for crashes and stability are in the works. It does not mention Gaming Services, so keep using the steps above. Related pages: crash on launch and Microsoft account link failed.

None of these steps is guaranteed. They are the steps Microsoft documents and players reported on launch week.

FAQ

Why does Minecraft Dungeons II ask me to install Gaming Services?

The PC version relies on Microsoft's Gaming Services. If the component is missing or broken, the game asks to install it. Players on Steam report that clicking Yes sometimes ends in an Unreal Engine crash or nothing at all.

What should I try first?

Update Gaming Services and the Xbox app under Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, sign in to the Xbox app, and restart the PC. A Steam poster fixed it by installing the Xbox app from Microsoft's official site.

How do I reinstall Gaming Services?

A Microsoft Community Moderator gives these steps: in an administrator PowerShell run get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers, then start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN, install the app, accept the UAC prompt and restart. Or use the Gaming Services Repair Tool from Xbox Support.

Does Mojang know about it?

On Sep 30 a Mojang developer post on Steam said most login and account linking issues were resolved on the backend and that hotfixes for crashes and stability are in the works. It does not name Gaming Services.

Does this work on Linux or Steam Deck?

No. The Gaming Services check is why the game does not start under Proton; see our Linux and Steam Deck status page. Mojang says it is working on Steam Deck support.
