Linux and Steam Deck: Dungeons II Status
SymptomThe game asks for Gaming Services then shows a black screen or nothing on Steam Deck or Linux.
Minecraft Dungeons II (Minecraft Dungeons 2) does not currently work on Steam Deck, SteamOS or desktop Linux. It needs Microsoft’s Gaming Services, which Proton can’t provide, so the game tries to install a component and then exits or never shows a window. There is no verified workaround as of Sep 29, 2026. If you want to play now, the realistic options are Windows, an Xbox or another console, or waiting for a patch.
Mojang says it is working on it
GamingOnLinux reports that the Minecraft team replied on Mojang’s official feedback site (Steam Deck Support post): “We’ve seen your feedback about Steam Deck support for Minecraft Dungeons II. The team is working on it and we hope to have more to share soon.” No date or workaround was given, and we could not open the feedback post ourselves, so this is a media report of an official reply. Until a patch ships, the game still does not run under Proton.
What players see
- The game asks to install or repair Microsoft Gaming Services, then nothing happens.
- A black screen or a background process with no window (a Proton issue on GitHub describes exactly this on Proton Experimental).
- On Windows dual-boot, the same account may report that the game is not owned until sign-in completes; see Microsoft account link failed.
What is known and what isn’t
Known:
- The Steam store page lists Windows as the only platform.
- Linux press reported the black screen under Proton and traced it to the game’s reliance on Gaming Services, which are tied to the Microsoft Store on Windows.
- A Proton issue (#10193) was filed on launch day with no fix posted at the time we checked.
- A Steam Community “Linux Issue Thread” exists; a poster who read the logs said the game asks the Microsoft Store about the install type and then runs a repair program and exits, so a workaround would need Proton to emulate part of that API. That is a player’s analysis, not an official statement.
Unknown: whether Mojang, Microsoft or Valve will change anything, and when. Linux press noted that a Mojang developer said the studio hadn’t announced support for that platform; the comment was later removed and the developer clarified it wasn’t relevant to their role, so treat it as no official position.
What players tried (and it did not work)
Reviewers reported testing Proton Experimental, GE builds and adding WebView2 with Protontricks. None got past the Gaming Services step. We don’t cover bypassing the ownership check, and we don’t recommend it.
Options while you wait
- Play on a Windows PC (or Xbox / other console). The game supports crossplay, so you can still join friends on other platforms. See platforms and crossplay.
- Install Windows on the Deck or dual-boot. One reviewer said they installed Windows on their Steam Deck and the game ran “about as best as you can imagine.” This is a single report, and it is a large detour for a $30 game.
- Wait for a Proton update or game patch. Watch the Proton issue and the Steam news page.
- Refund if it isn’t playable. Steam refunds work if you’re within 14 days and under two hours of play: Steam refunds.
- Cloud gaming: we couldn’t verify whether the game is offered via Xbox Cloud Gaming, so check the Xbox app for current availability before relying on it.
Steam Deck tips if a fix arrives
Handheld controls are a good fit for this game: players say it plays best with a controller, and the PC version has no WASD movement (it uses click-to-move with a mouse). Check the system requirements too; we have no Deck performance data yet because nobody can run it.
How to tell when it’s fixed
Watch three places: the Steam store page for a Steam Deck compatibility label or a Linux platform badge, the Proton issue for a merged fix, and the game’s Steam news page for patch notes. Until one of them changes, anything claiming a one-click Linux fix is unverified.
None of this is a guaranteed fix; it is the honest state of Linux support on launch day. We’ll update the page when it changes.
FAQ
Does Minecraft Dungeons II work on Steam Deck?
Not at launch. The Steam page lists Windows only, and players report the game fails under Proton on Steam Deck and desktop Linux. It asks for Microsoft Gaming Services and then does not open a window.
Did the original Minecraft Dungeons run on Steam Deck?
Multiple reviewers say the first game ran well on the Deck, which is why the sequel's failure surprised them. That is player testimony, not a Valve rating we verified.
Is there a Proton version or launch option that fixes it?
Not that we could verify. Reviewers report that Proton Experimental, GE builds and Protontricks attempts did not help. The failure is in the ownership and Gaming Services layer, not a missing graphics setting.
Can I get a refund?
Steam refunds apply if you bought within 14 days and played under two hours. See Steam's refund policy.
