Is Minecraft Dungeons 2 Cross Platform? Yes
Yes, Minecraft Dungeons II (Minecraft Dungeons 2) is cross platform. Mojang says its goal was “one-click crossplay”, so you can play with friends “even if it means they’re on another platform”. Heroes are stored online, and linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account lets you keep playing with the same hero on a different platform. This applies to online heroes only.
Which platforms can play together
Minecraft.net lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Mojang’s co-op article says a party code lets friends join you “regardless of which platform anyone is using”. That is Mojang’s general statement about the game, not a list of tested pairs, and we found no source saying any pair cannot play together.
| Your platform | PC (Steam / Xbox app) | Xbox Series X|S | PS5 | Switch | Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam / Xbox app) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PS5 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Switch | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Switch 2 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
All “Yes” entries rest on Mojang’s official statement, not on pair-by-pair checks. Players who cannot connect are covered in co-op and crossplay connection issues.
Cross-progression
Mojang’s co-op article says: “We store hero data online in our backend, so your progression isn’t tied to one specific device.” It adds that “Linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account will let you keep playing with the same hero.” It also says that, “If the platform supports it”, you can sign in with your own platform account on a friend’s device and carry on with your hero. We don’t know which platforms that condition excludes.
Online and offline are separate modes. Mojang says keeping them separate gives it more control over online play and cheating. Players report an offline hero cannot go online or to another platform, and several asked for a way to convert one. See offline vs online hero.
What each platform needs for online play
All platforms use a Microsoft account for the online hero. If linking fails, see Microsoft account link failed.
| Platform | Online play requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | “Online console multiplayer requires an Xbox Game Pass subscription” | Xbox product page |
| PS5 | “PS Plus required for online play” and “Supports up to 4 online players with PS Plus” | PlayStation Store page |
| Switch / Switch 2 | “Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account required for online features” | Nintendo of America page |
| PC (Steam) | Steam lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer and Online Co-op; we found no subscription listed | Steam page |
| PC (Xbox app) | The Xbox page lists the subscription requirement only for console multiplayer | Xbox product page |
One Switch 2 player reports that adding a second controller for couch co-op prompted them to sign the second profile up for Nintendo Switch Online. That is a single player report and Nintendo does not say it applies to local play.
How to play with friends on another platform
- Create an online hero from the main menu; offline heroes cannot join online parties.
- Make sure each player has the right subscription for their console.
- Open the party and share the party code. Mojang describes it as eight letters and numbers, unique to your current party. Your friends enter it in the “join by party code” dialog and join you directly, “through the lobby or an ongoing game”.
- If no friends are available, matchmaking can find players or fill the open spots in a party. Mojang says it looks at core quest progress, region and power level, and can match you into a session already under way.
Mojang also says the game runs on dedicated servers and picks the best server for the party based on each player’s ping. Parties can have up to four players and mix couch and online play.
